Study links higher cancer risk in children exposed to radioactive waste near Coldwater Creek, St. Louis.
A new study in JAMA Network Open links higher cancer risk to children who lived near Coldwater Creek in St. Louis, polluted with radioactive atomic bomb waste from the 1940s to the 1960s.
Participants living within one kilometer of the creek as children were 44% more likely to develop cancer and 85% more likely to have radiosensitive cancers compared to those living more than 20 kilometers away.
The study, using data from 4,209 tooth donors, underscores the need to clean up radioactive waste sites.
