UK to allow officials to request bank details from benefit claimants to fight fraud.
The UK's Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) plans to allow officials to request bank details from benefit claimants, including those on Universal Credit, to combat fraud and errors.
The new powers could also extend to taking funds directly from accounts if recipients owe money to the DWP and refuse to repay it.
DWP Minister Andrew Western clarified that there are no current plans to use the data for surveillance.
