Settlement proposed in lawsuit against British Columbia over solitary confinement use in prisons.
A proposed $60 million settlement has been reached in a lawsuit against British Columbia over the use of solitary confinement in its correctional facilities.
The settlement, which must be approved by the B.C.
Supreme Court, could provide up to $91,000 to eligible class members who were improperly subjected to solitary confinement, leading to emotional, physical, and psychological harm.
The class includes individuals incarcerated after April 18, 2005, who were involuntarily held in solitary for at least 15 consecutive days or who had a known mental illness.
A hearing to decide on the settlement is scheduled for October 22.
