Massachusetts health officials have reported the first animal case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in 2025, found in a goat from Lunenburg. This has raised the risk level to moderate in Lunenburg, Leominster, Shirley, and Fitchburg. While most people infected with WNV show no symptoms, older adults and those with weak immune systems may face severe illness. Health officials advise using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during dusk and dawn to prevent mosquito bites. No human cases have been reported yet this year.
