British Columbia denies funding for $1M annual drug needed by 10-year-old with Batten disease.
British Columbia's Health Minister, Josie Osborne, confirmed that coverage for the life-prolonging drug Brineura, for 10-year-old Charleigh Pollock with Batten disease, will not be reinstated.
The drug, costing nearly $1 million annually, was discontinued on June 19.
Discussions are ongoing between Island Health and Charleigh’s family to explore private funding options, with at least two fundraising drives underway to help cover costs.
The health authority would provide facilities for drug administration if the family can afford it.
