flag Taiwan's president oversees major military drills, showcasing U.S.-made tanks amid tensions with China.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te observed live-fire drills with newly acquired U.S.-made Abrams M1A2T tanks during the 10-day Han Kuang military exercises, aimed at boosting Taiwan's defense against potential threats from China. The drills, the longest in Taiwan's history, also involve F-16V jet fighters and HIMARS missile defenses. Taiwan plans to purchase 108 of these tanks for $1.45 billion. Despite China's dismissal of the exercises as a bluff, Taiwan is also stepping up civilian participation in national defense.
