Police in Wiltshire and Cheshire have issued over £400,000 in fines to drivers using mobile phones while driving, with Wiltshire fining 2,000 drivers and Cheshire issuing 969 fixed penalty notices between April 2024 and March 2025.
The law against using handheld devices while driving, in place since 2003, was made stricter in 2017, leading to a £200 fine and six penalty points.
Wiltshire Police also reported that phone use contributed to 17 accidents in 2023 and 2024.
