In response to a heatwave hitting the UK, Bedfordshire is deploying gritters to protect roads from damage as temperatures soar up to 34°C (93.2°F). The gritters spread crushed stone to prevent tarmac from softening and to improve road grip. An amber health alert has been issued for the East of England due to potential NHS pressures and travel disruptions.
