Georgia considers raising cigarette tax to reduce smoking and fund healthcare, as Maine hikes its tax by $1.50.
In an effort to curb smoking and offset healthcare costs, Georgia lawmakers and health advocates are pushing for a significant increase in the state's cigarette tax, currently one of the lowest in the U.S. A House Study Committee has been formed to examine the potential benefits of raising the tax to at least the national average.
This move is supported by public health advocates, who argue it could generate up to $500 million annually, helping to cover Medicaid costs related to smoking, which are around $850 million a year.
Meanwhile, Maine has approved a $1.50 increase in its cigarette tax, the first in over 20 years.
