flag Conservationists reintroduce the New Forest cicada to the UK, absent since the 1990s, with 11 cicadas from France.

Conservationists have reintroduced the New Forest cicada, Cicadetta montana, to the UK after the species disappeared in the 1990s due to changes in land management. Eleven female cicadas were captured in France and brought to a specially created habitat in the UK. As cicadas spend four years underground as nymphs, the success of the project won't be known until 2029. The effort aims to re-establish the species in the New Forest and is funded by Natural England and charitable trusts.
