Tests reveal many Australian sunscreens don't meet their advertised SPF levels, prompting calls for investigation.
Independent testing by Choice found that many popular Australian sunscreens, including brands like Cancer Council, Banana Boat, and Bondi Sands, do not offer the advertised SPF protection. Out of 20 tested brands, only four met their SPF 50 or 50+ claims, with most rating between SPF 24 and 43. The consumer group has called for the TGA and ACCC to investigate potential misleading claims. Despite the findings, any sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher still offers significant sun protection.
