Canada expands its summer jobs program by 6,000 positions to tackle high youth unemployment.
The Canadian government is expanding its Canada Summer Jobs program to help young people find work, as one in five students aged 15-24 was unemployed in May, the highest rate since 2009. The government plans to subsidize an additional 6,000 jobs, on top of the 70,000 already planned, with $25 million in funding. However, economists suggest that broader economic issues could limit the program's effectiveness. Employment Minister Patty Hajdu acknowledged the need for employers, community leaders, and organizations to also support young people in finding jobs.
