New Zealand's government has introduced legislation to limit the conversion of farmland into pine forests for carbon farming, aiming to protect food production and rural communities.
The law restricts high-to-medium versatility farmland from entering the Emissions Trading Scheme and limits new registrations to 15,000 hectares annually on medium versatility land.
It also allows up to 25% of a farm's land to be planted in trees.
The legislation is expected to take effect in October 2025.
