Archaeologists discover 1,700-year-old sarcophagus in Israel with unique scene of Roman gods.
Archaeologists in Caesarea, Israel, have found a 1,700-year-old marble sarcophagus with a rare depiction of a mythological drinking contest between the Roman gods Dionysus and Hercules.
Found during excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority, the sarcophagus suggests Romans viewed death as a transition to a freer existence.
It is the first such scene discovered on a burial coffin in the region and is currently undergoing restoration.
