New report highlights lack of health studies on U.S. nuclear tests' impact in the Marshall Islands.
A new report by Dr. Arjun Makhijani reveals a lack of systematic health studies on the impacts of 67 U.S. nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands from 1946 to 1958, despite early documentation of adverse pregnancy outcomes like stillbirths and miscarriages.
The report, funded by Greenpeace Germany, notes gamma radiation levels in the capital, Majuro, were tens of times higher than normal after the tests.
No definitive studies have been done on the link between these tests and birth defects, though the possibility is acknowledged.
