Canadian duty-free stores seek government aid after losing 80% of revenue due to less cross-border traffic.
Canadian duty-free stores are seeking financial aid from the federal government due to an 80% drop in revenue caused by reduced cross-border traffic.
The Frontier Duty Free Association, representing 32 stores, and 15 border city mayors wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, requesting immediate cash support and changes to excise tax policies to compete with U.S. stores.
The association warns that without help, one-third of the stores could close, threatening 3,000 jobs.
