Ostrich farm operators fight cull order, claim herd immunity against unique avian flu strain.
Operators of a British Columbia ostrich farm are calling for independent testing to prevent the culling of nearly 400 ostriches following an avian flu outbreak.
The farm argues the birds have shown no signs of illness for over four months and claim herd immunity has been acquired.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has ordered the cull, fined the farm $20,000 for non-compliance with anti-avian flu measures, and issued violation notices for not reporting illnesses and deaths.
The CFIA states the infection is a mutation not seen elsewhere in Canada.
US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has proposed saving the birds for research.
