Sonia "Sunny" Jacobs, a 76-year-old former Florida death row inmate who was wrongfully convicted of murder and freed in 1992, died in a house fire in Galway, Ireland.
The fire also claimed the life of a man in his 30s believed to be her carer.
Jacobs, an advocate against the death penalty, had spent 17 years in prison before her acquittal.
Her husband, Peter Pringle, was also wrongfully convicted and released after 15 years.
Both bodies were retrieved from the property and are undergoing post-mortem examinations.
