Louisiana's House passes bill granting legal protections to IVF embryos, seen as 'juridical persons.'
Louisiana's House has passed Senate Bill 156, defining IVF embryos as "juridical persons" with legal protections, but not as full legal children or property.
The bill, which passed 82-14, bans clauses in IVF contracts that allow embryos to be destroyed and considers embryos viable unless they fail to develop within 72 hours.
Only intended parents can make decisions about the embryos' use.
The bill now returns to the Senate for further review.
