India launches world's most precise weather model, BFS, improving forecasts with a 6-km grid.

India has launched the Bharat Forecast System (BFS), a high-resolution weather model with a 6-kilometer grid, making it the world's most precise. Developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and operated by the India Meteorological Department, BFS aims to provide more accurate and localized weather predictions, improving disaster management, agriculture, and public safety. Since its trial in 2022, BFS has shown a 30-64% improvement in forecasting, particularly for extreme rainfall and monsoon regions. The system uses data from a network of 40 Doppler Weather Radars, with plans to expand to 100 radars nationwide.
