Indian alcohol industry seeks reduced import duties on wines and spirits in the EU trade deal.
The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) is pushing for a phased reduction in import duties on alcoholic beverages under the proposed India-EU free trade agreement.
They suggest lowering the current 150% customs duty to 100% immediately, then to 50% in ten years for bottled products like wines and spirits.
For bulk spirits, they recommend a quicker cut from 150% to 75% and down to 25% over ten years.
However, they stress the need for strict safeguards to prevent cheap imports and misuse of trade concessions.
