Bangladesh begins trial of officials accused of crimes against humanity in the 2024 protest killings.
Bangladesh's first trial of officials tied to the ousted Sheikh Hasina government began in a special court in Dhaka. Eight police officials, including the former police commissioner Habibur Rahman, are charged with crimes against humanity for the killing of six protesters during the 2024 student-led uprising that ended Hasina's rule. Four are in custody, while four are being tried in absentia. Up to 1,400 people were reportedly killed during the unrest. The interim government aims to hold elections by June 2026.
