The Texas House has given initial approval to Senate Bill 8, which requires all Texas sheriffs to collaborate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through 287(g) agreements, allowing ICE to authorize local authorities to perform certain types of immigration enforcement in local jails. The bill, which previously applied only to counties with over 100,000 residents, was amended to cover all counties. It needs further approval from both chambers before going to Governor Greg Abbott. Critics argue the bill will lead to racial profiling and fear among undocumented immigrants.
