The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) fears that around 427 Rohingya refugees may have died in two boat sinkings off the coast of Myanmar in early May. The first boat, with 267 people, sank on May 9 with only 66 survivors, while the second, carrying 247 people, capsized on May 10, leaving 21 survivors. These incidents represent a significant increase from the 30 Rohingya deaths reported in boat journeys in 2025. The UNHCR has called for urgent action to prevent further tragedies.
