South Dakota officials expand state's involvement in federal immigration enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border.
South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden and Attorney General Marty Jackley are expanding the state’s role in federal immigration enforcement.
Rhoden visited the U.S.-Mexico border, met with the 109th Engineer Battalion, and took airboat and helicopter tours of the Rio Grande.
Jackley authorized the Division of Criminal Investigation to participate in the 287(g) program, allowing state agents to identify and detain undocumented immigrants, focusing on violent criminals and drug dealers.
Both officials aim to enhance cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
