Nebraska becomes first U.S. state to ban SNAP benefits for buying soda and energy drinks.
Nebraska has become the first U.S. state to receive a federal waiver allowing it to ban the purchase of soda and energy drinks using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The move, announced by Republican Governor Jim Pillen and USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, affects around 152,000 SNAP recipients in the state.
Pillen stated there was no justification for taxpayers to subsidize such purchases.
Six other states have also requested similar waivers.
