Teen hacker pleads guilty to extorting $2.85M from educational software firm PowerSchool.
Matthew Lane, a 19-year-old Massachusetts college student, has agreed to plead guilty to hacking into PowerSchool, an education software provider used by over 18,000 schools supporting 60 million students, and a telecommunications company.
Lane stole personal data and demanded ransoms, including $2.85 million in Bitcoin from PowerSchool to prevent data leaks.
He faces at least two years in prison for cyber extortion and identity theft.
