The scandal erupted in 2015 with a book detailing abuse from 30 victims. SCV, founded in 1971, controlled religious schools and had ties to Peru's elite and the United States. Despite early complaints of abuse by the group's founder, Luis Fernando Figari, who maintains his innocence, Pope Leo helped secure financial settlements for victims in a 2019 meeting.
