Jemna, Tunisia, thrives by managing its historic palm grove, generating local jobs and funding community projects.
Since the 2011 Tunisian Revolution, the desert town of Jemna has taken control of its 100-year-old palm grove, producing some of North Africa's finest dates. Residents, through the Association to Protect the Jemna Oasis (ASOJ), manage the grove as a non-profit, reinvesting profits locally. This has generated nearly 14 million dinars ($4.5 million) over 15 years, providing jobs and funding local projects like schools and scholarships. Despite facing challenges to preserve their economic self-rule, Jemna's model of agricultural self-management continues to thrive.
