Elmira honors corrections officers post-strike with Unity in the Community event.

The seventh Unity in the Community event honored local corrections officers in Elmira, NY, on May 17, 2025. Organized by Mayor Dan Mandell and Dr. Stephen Coleman, the event followed a 23-day strike by officers who sought safer conditions and the repeal of the HALT Act. Mayor Mandell declared May 17 as Corrections Officers Appreciation Day, and officials praised the officers' vital work.
