Georgia passes law shielding pesticide makers like Bayer from cancer lawsuits, effective January 1, 2025.
Georgia has become the second state to pass legislation protecting pesticide makers, like Bayer, from lawsuits claiming they hid health risks of their products, specifically Roundup weed killer.
The law, signed by Governor Brian Kemp, shields manufacturers following federal labeling rules from cancer-related lawsuits.
It takes effect January 1, but won't affect existing cases, such as a recent Georgia jury award of $2.1 billion to a man who claimed Roundup caused his cancer.
Bayer, which acquired Roundup through the 2018 Monsanto purchase, faces over 67,000 lawsuits alleging its glyphosate ingredient causes cancer.
Despite this, the US EPA says glyphosate is not likely to cause cancer when used as directed.
Bayer has set aside $16 billion to settle lawsuits.
