The U.S. Department of Education proposes simplifying student loan repayment with fixed or income-based plans.
The U.S. Department of Education is considering a major overhaul of student loan repayment plans, offering two options: a standard plan with fixed monthly payments over 10 to 25 years and an income-driven plan with payments based on adjusted gross income (AGI).
The income-driven plan would have a $10 minimum payment for those earning $10,000 or less.
Both plans would waive remaining interest and extend loan forgiveness to 360 payments or 30 years.
This overhaul aims to simplify the repayment process and help 43 million borrowers manage their debts.
