flag Rare New Zealand snail filmed laying egg for the first time at a conservation facility.

A rare New Zealand snail, Powelliphanta augusta, has been filmed laying an egg from its neck for the first time at a conservation facility. This threatened species, which takes eight years to reach sexual maturity, lays about five eggs per year. The snails have been cared for in chilled containers for nearly two decades to protect them from habitat loss due to mining. Over 1,900 snails and nearly 2,200 eggs have been saved at the facility since 2004.
