Samoan woman honored for founding Aotearoa’s first Pacific-focused Parkinson's support group.
Aloese Lefono, a Samoan woman from South Auckland, has been honored for founding Aotearoa's first Pacific-focused Parkinson's support group.
Starting with just three people, the group now has over 20 patients and carers who meet monthly to share experiences and support through food, language, and faith.
Lefono, recognized with the 2024 Minister of Health Volunteer Award, has also facilitated research identifying rare genetic changes in young Pacific patients with Parkinson's.
Despite her success, she calls for more systemic support and resources for the Pacific community.
