Gas prices average $3.165 per gallon, down from last year but could rise due to summer demand.
As of May 5, 2025, the national average for regular gasoline is $3.165 per gallon, a slight increase from the week before but significantly lower than a year ago at $3.652.
Prices vary widely by state, from $2.65 to $4.77 per gallon, with the highest prices in the West and Northeast.
The decline is attributed to lower crude oil prices, with West Texas Intermediate crude at $60.59 per barrel.
However, summer travel and seasonal demand could push prices up.
Diesel prices have also fallen to $3.532 per gallon, down from $3.982 last year.
