Hawaiian ancestral remains taken in 1840 are returned from a Northern Ireland museum to Hawaii.
A team from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hui Iwi Kuamoʻo has retrieved ancestral Hawaiian remains, known as iwi kūpuna, from the Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland.
These remains were taken from Hawaii illicitly in 1840 and donated to the Belfast museum in 1857.
The repatriation completes a years-long process and is seen as a step towards healing and restoring dignity to the ancestors.
