Scientists discover unique 1746 mummy preservation method using wood chips and zinc chloride in Austria.
Scientists have uncovered a unique embalming method used on a 1746 mummy found in an Austrian church crypt.
Known as the "air-dried chaplain," the mummy of Franz Xaver Sidler von Rosenegg was preserved by stuffing his abdomen with wood chips, linen, and zinc chloride through his rectum.
This method, documented for the first time, dried the body and reduced bacterial growth.
Researchers from Germany’s Ludwig-Maximilians University also found that the priest had a diet rich in central European grains and possibly fish.
The exact cause of death is still unknown.
