The 6888th "Six Triple Eight" Battalion, an all-female, Black WWII unit, receives the Congressional Gold Medal.
The all-female, predominantly Black 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as the "Six Triple Eight," has been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal 80 years after their World War II service.
Deployed to Europe in 1945, the unit tackled a backlog of 17 million undelivered mail pieces for American soldiers and government personnel, completing the task in half the expected time despite harsh conditions.
Though they received medals upon return to the U.S. in 1946, public recognition was lacking until a recent campaign led to the Congressional Gold Medal award, the highest civilian honor from Congress.
