Florida proposes changing its state bird to the American flamingo and designating the Florida scrub-jay as the state songbird.
Florida's state bird could change from the northern mockingbird to the American flamingo, with the Florida scrub-jay designated as the state songbird, under Senate Bill 880 proposed by State Senator Ileana Garcia. The flamingo, not currently the state bird of any U.S. state, and the scrub-jay, unique to Florida, could get official recognition if the bill passes, taking effect July 1st. This marks the eighth attempt to replace the mockingbird, which has symbolized Florida for nearly a century.
