Study links toxin colibactin from E. coli to increased early-onset colorectal cancer in young adults.
Recent research from the University of California San Diego suggests that a toxin called colibactin, produced by certain E. coli strains, may be linked to the rising rates of early-onset colorectal cancer.
The study found that DNA mutations associated with colibactin were 3.3 times more common in patients under 40 than those over 70, indicating potential early-life exposure to the toxin.
Researchers are now working on noninvasive tests to detect colibactin exposure through stool samples.
