Kentucky lawmakers are asking for a delay in the May 7th enforcement of the Real ID requirement, citing limited appointment availability and long lines at driver licensing offices.
The state senators, led by Senate Transportation Committee Chair Jimmy Higdon, wrote to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, arguing that only about 40% of Kentuckians have upgraded to Real ID and that the current system is overwhelmed.
The Real ID will be needed for domestic air travel and accessing federal facilities, but existing Kentucky driver licenses and passports are still valid for driving and international travel.
