Astronomers discover a Mercury-sized planet disintegrating due to extreme heat from its star.
Astronomers have found a small, rocky planet, BD+05 4868 Ab, about 140 light-years away, rapidly disintegrating due to its close orbit around its star.
Similar in size to Mercury, the planet completes an orbit in 30.5 hours, leading to surface temperatures over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit and causing it to shed material equivalent to one Mount Everest each orbit.
This disintegration is expected to completely destroy the planet in 1 to 2 million years.
