Irish teachers want religious education moved from schools to families, survey shows.
A recent survey by the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) of over 1,000 primary school teachers shows a majority believe that religious education and preparation for sacraments should be handled by families or parishes, not schools.
Teachers also prefer schools to be run by secular patrons, with 63% supporting this change.
Currently, the Catholic Church oversees most primary schools in Ireland.
