Review finds MI5 didn't hide files on IRA agent Stakeknife, but had poor record management.
A review has concluded that MI5 did not deliberately withhold files from an investigation into the IRA agent known as Stakeknife.
The investigation, Operation Kenova, looked into Stakeknife’s operations, believed to involve more lives lost than saved.
While no deliberate withholding was found, MI5’s information management practices for Northern Ireland material were found to be weaker, leading to some documents not being properly stored or indexed.
Stakeknife is widely believed to be Freddie Scappaticci, who died in 2023.
The final report of Operation Kenova is due to be published later this year.
