British tourist faces £60,000 bill after surgery, insurer cites alcohol in refusal.
Robert Atkinson, a 67-year-old British tourist in Benidorm, Spain, faced a £60,000 hospital bill after an emergency spinal surgery due to a collapsed vertebra.
His insurance company, Zurich, refused to cover the costs citing trace amounts of alcohol in his system from a dinner glass of wine.
Atkinson was also unknowingly taken to a private hospital by a private ambulance, which wasn't covered by his insurance.
