Taiwan charges Chinese captain for damaging undersea cables, marking first such prosecution.
Taiwanese prosecutors have charged a Chinese ship captain, Wang, with intentionally damaging undersea cables off Taiwan in February.
The ship, Hong Tai 58, registered in Togo, was detained after suspicions it had dropped anchor near a cable, causing damage.
Seven other crew members will not be charged and will be sent back to China.
This is Taiwan's first prosecution for damaging sea cables.
Taiwan has reported five cable malfunctions this year, up from three in the previous two years, leading to increased protection efforts, including monitoring a "blacklist" of nearly 100 China-linked ships.
