Illinois House bans Native American mascots in schools, pushing for changes by July 2026.
The Illinois House of Representatives passed a bill (HB 1237) that would ban Native American mascots and imagery in K-12 schools, including names like "Redskins, Braves, Chiefs," and related logos.
If signed into law, schools would need to choose new mascots by July 1, 2026, and could use current materials until September 1, 2030.
Exceptions are made for schools with direct ties to federally recognized tribes with tribal permission.
The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
Similar efforts are underway in North Carolina to ban offensive Native American mascots in public schools.
