LGB+ individuals in the UK face significantly higher risks of suicide and self-harm, study finds.
People identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB+) face a higher risk of intentional self-harm or suicide compared to those identifying as straight or heterosexual, according to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The risk of suicide for LGB+ individuals was found to be 2.2 times higher, while the risk of intentional self-harm was 2.5 times higher.
The study highlighted that females, those aged 16-24, and individuals from a black ethnic group within the LGB+ community are particularly at risk.
The ONS linked census data with hospital records and death registrations for this analysis.
