Data centers' electricity use forecast to more than double by 2030, driven by AI growth.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that electricity consumption by data centers will more than double by 2030, mainly due to the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Currently, data centers use about 1.5% of global electricity, with consumption growing by 12% annually over the past five years.
By 2030, this consumption could reach 3%, equivalent to Japan's total electricity use.
The surge in demand could lead to a 67% increase in CO2 emissions, from 180 million to 300 million tonnes by 2035.
However, the report also notes AI's potential to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.
