Prague Zoo joins global effort to save Lord Howe Island stick insect, once thought extinct.
The Prague Zoo has joined an international effort to save the Lord Howe Island stick insect, a species once considered extinct for over 80 years.
The insect, native to a remote archipelago off Australia, was nearly wiped out by rats in 1918.
In 2001, it was found surviving on a nearby island, and now six institutions, including the Prague Zoo, are breeding the insect in hopes of reintroducing it to Lord Howe Island after rats were eradicated in 2019.
